Wednesday Workshops and the ML45

Members built a new 45 inch yacht design that is particularly suited to Mawson Lakes, so we naturally called it “The Mawson Lakes 45”. They were built in a group workshop environment so that all members of the club participated and helped each other. Seven new boats have been launched so far, including three by members who had never built before with two more on the way. The first was launched on 13 August 2005. Images of the workshops are on this website under the 'Club Images' link. The design is taken from a 1970's plan by Vic Smeed called the 'Panache', which we modified and scaled up from 30 to 45 inches overall length. The mast and sails are the same as those fitted to an International One Meter (IOM) class yacht and optionally the keel and rudder can be too. The ML45 concept provides a more traditional design and construct which is ideal for the newcomer to the hobby. It then allows a less costly transition to a club focused on racing with the IOM class. At our fortnightly Wednesday night workshops we help each other with tuning, assist the new members build their boats and work on the restoration of three vintage 'A' Class boats.
